My son (18 next week) has been diagnosed with Aspergers.  Finally a diagnosis that seems to fit him the best so far. His case is fairly mild.

However, I need some suggestions for reading about how to handle this *adult* in our home and society. The past 6-8 months have been terrible -- forcing us to the doctor for help.   The last few years we thought we were dealing with Sensory Integration Dysfunction.  Everything on the internet thus far seems to deal with younger children and I hate to buy books that deal with children's issues although he does behave like a child sometimes!

Thank you,
Penny

Hi, Penny!
Welcome to autismnotes! My oldest son has aspergers and is about to turn 16. Our favorite books are published by the Autism Asperger Publishing Company- you will see alot of AAPC stuff here as they are so practical in their works. Their books on adolesence/adulthood can be found at: http://www.asperger.net/index_parenting_teaching_adolescents&adults.htm

"Anything by Brenda Smith Myles " is the best advice I was given when Cam was entering his teen years- Stephen Shore writes from an adult on the spectrum perspective- Cam loves his self advocacy book, "Ask and Tell."
Hope that helps somewhat- anyone else??

Definitely read "The Complete Guide to Asperger Syndrome" by Tony Attwood, Jessica Kingsley Publishers.  Not only does it perfectly describe most aspects of AS, it also has an adult issues section.  If you have specific questions about strategies with adults, feel free to contact me at the MAAP Services link on the Autism Notes website.  My daughter is 35 years old and has AS.

Another suggestion: Read the book "Thinking in Pictures" by Temple Grandin. It's the life story of a successful woman with autism.
