Patti- there are no silly questions.  I'm going to start a topic under "Diagnosis Discussions" titled something like 'AS Info.' to respond.

Hi my name is Diana and I have 2 children already on the spectrum and a third child who happens to be 15yrs just now in the process of being diagnosed.  I think this is the hardest of all three because I feel like I really dropped the ball and should have known this was the problem.  I just hope that with the school I can help my son as I find him becoming more and more depressed and it really worries me.  Thanks to everyone for being willing to share their experiences.  It is easier when you have somewhere to turn for answers.

Hello,
My Name is Michele Given. I am a single parent of three. My oldest child Christopher, 17, was diagnosed with Autistic Disorder-High-Functioning.  This journey has been a most difficult one.  He is considered multidisabled due to the presence of seizures, and vision issues that are commonly found within the autism community.  Resently he has been suffering from severe depression. We are steadily working on this issue.  My two other children are typically developing, Victoria 15, and Samantha 16.

I am currently employed with Washington Gorge Action Programs.  I am a Family Resource Coordinator and Program Coordinator for Skamania County in Washington State.  The programs I run are the Infant/ Toddler Early Intervention Program for children birth to three with developmental delays and the Supported Employment program for adults 21 and older with developmental disabilities.

Thank you for being available to parents as well as professionals who live with Autism on a daioly basis.  It is very much appreciated!!

Hello there,
My name is Janine I began my working life training as a general nurse, as part of my general training we were fortunate enough to have a brief spell at a psychiatric hospital.
I enjoyed this experience and went on after graduating from medical school to train as an sen(mh) which is a state enrolled nurse for the mentally handicapped. It was while going through this training I came across autism.
After graduation again, I moved on to working with children who had behavioral problems, lots more courses and training later I have arrived at what I do now. I work with various professional people as part of a team.
I mainly work with autistic children but do on occassions have dealings with other deficits on the spectrum.
I write a lot of social skill stories and was recently able as my technical ability with computers is quite limited to publish a short poem on the net, it is at www.autismsocialstories.org.uk
Anyway the reason I ended up here in your forum is simple, I have for some years now worked closely with various families who struggle to come to terms with an autistic diagnosis, and then once they have accepted and settled back to family life, find all the professionals conflict with ideas and help!
This is where I have found social stories have helped alot of families, for example recently I wrote a story for a very confused four year old on "all my helpers".
I am here to offer social stories, help and advice to your members
my main site can be viewed at www.autismsocialstories.com

Hi, my name is Sam. I have been married for three years and we have a  son, Shane that is 20 months old and was just diagnosed with autism on July 10. I don't know much about it besides googling things on the computer. This week we are starting all the thearapies and I'm scared to death. These last few months have been a roller coaster for me and my family. Shane has been sufering from chronic diareaha since April, was having seizures every night that lasted for three weeks but have not came back, has severe allergies and has a horrible rash from head to toe that has now lasted 4 weeks. We have been in and out of doctor offices and emergency rooms. I wanted join a site where I can learn more about the Autism Spectrum and learn how to deal with it. Thanks!!

Welcome, Sam! Our youngest was diagnosed right before he turned 2 as well. He had alot of developmental delays- but not the gut  or seizure issues. There's alot of information out there and its really overwhelming. If I may suggest one book for families it's Kristi Sakai's "Finding Our Way" from www.asperger.net . Getting thru all the information can be very confusing. I ay trust your 'mommy gut' and beware of those who tell you you have to do something a certain way and pay alot to do it. Feel free to ask anything here- there are lots of great people here.

gotta run for now- hope to chat more soon!

Hi I'm William's mom new to the forum and have recently moved to the Orlando, Fl area.  Will was diagnosed with Aspergers (PPD-NOS) two years ago.  I know the medical books state that if a child as speech delay he doesn't have Aspergers, but if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, etc... Anyway I am now in the process of establishing my "team" for Williams treatments.  I have contacted a specialist for his social skills, which seems promising, I'll keep you posted on his progress.  My hopes for moving and William establishing friendships have been challenged already, I must be more patient and it will happen.  I have never joined in on forums, but this is much needed for me to communicate my thoughts and feelings to those who are "living it" also.

Glad to have you here- we were in Orlando last month at the ASA conference. Teamwork is probably one of the most important pieces of the support puzzle. Working together , we can do so much.
Looking forward to hearing more from you soon!
