Hi folks -
Just wanted to pass this along, not sure where to post it...my 15 year old Aspie son is on the vacation of a lifetime with his grandmother to Africa -- they are having a wonderful time, EXCEPT: the antimalarial meds his pediatrician gave him have caused him to have three mini-psychotic breaks. The last one, he writes in email, has caused him to week inconsolably, have suicidal thoughts, remember in gross detail every embarrassing and humiliating event that has ever happened to him.
These episodes pass after about 24 hours, but can you imagine being out on the Serengeti of Africa, and feeling this way? I could shoot the doctor...the information on the web SPECIFICALLY states that this drug should not be given to people who have had depression (as has my son) or to anyone with any history of psychological problems. All that the prescription bottle said was "May cause dizziness."
Anyway, I thought I would pass this along. There are much safer drugs available, so check it out if you ever plan on taking your Aspie someplace where they need this type of drug.
Now, off to go backhand his doctor and the pharmacist, both of whom should have known better!
